THE CAUCASUS
The Caucasus is the name given to the mountainous region on the border between Europe and Asia, lying between the Black and Caspian Seas. The region is known for the Caucasian Mountains, and their beautiful scenery, from snow-capped peaks to lush green valleys.
The Caucasus is rich in culture and history. Its location at the border between two continents has resulted in unique and diverse cultural influences, evolving constantly over time owing to the major historical trade routes through the region. The first nations to adopt Christianity are found here; the world's oldest wineries are said to have been here; the area is full of ancient churches, mosques and even older pagan temples. Traditional dances, cuisine and music have all been passed down from generation to generation, so that modern-day locals still have direct contact with their roots.
The Caucasus is comprised of the present-day states of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Turkey, with a number of partially recognised states and autonomous regions.
Political tension in recent years has caused barriers to unity between Caucasian nations and people. Each area and people has its own specific traditions, religion and culture, creating an intensely diverse cultural landscape. Yet there remain a number of similarities that unite people throughout the region; and as the CaucasusConnect team, we believe that this diversity should be cause for celebration.
